Hi.

Welcome to to our blog. We hope you’ll follow us around the globe.

Comuna 13

Comuna 13

Medellín, Colombia - Once a ‘no-go’ zone due to rampant violence among its streets, Comuna 13 has transformed into a lively neighborhood known for its beautiful graffiti and street art performances. Less than a decade ago tourists wouldn’t dare to venture into this area, but like much of Medellín, it has undergone rapid transformation and is now relatively safe aside from petty crime.

As with any big city, you can’t let your guard down completely, but what is apparent is the overwhelming sense of pride and hope from the local residents whom now can now roam freely on the streets at night and let their children play outside. The artwork serves as a platform for individuals to express theirselves openly and without fear. Although this is quickly becoming a tourist destination, there still exists a large socioeconomic gap in this area.

Medellín residential areas are ranked in “estratos” from 1-6, with estratos 6 being the most expensive and nicest parts of the city to live in. We stayed primarily in Laureles and El Poblado, ranked between estratos 4-5, which were really nice neighborhoods. For comparison, comuna 13 is primarily composed of estratos 2-3.

Many of the homes are simply constructed and it was rather humbling to see roofs weighted down with bricks, rocks, or anything heavy enough to keep the metal paneling held down. Despite this, Comuna 13 was full of life - smiling people, free outdoor gyms, public parks and street vendors on every block stands as a testament to the fact that these neighborhoods are on the verge of something special. Many positive changes are underway around Medellín in the form of urban planning, infrastructure, beautiful art and museums and a relatively new tourism industry. The locals, known as paisas, are some of the most welcoming and friendly people we’ve met on this trip and they know how to let loose and have a good time.

Good things are happening in Medellín and it’s safe to say that its communities are working hard to ensure only better things are to come. Only a short flight from the nations capitol of Bogotá, it’s certainly a must see if you have the opportunity. You won’t be disappointed.
